"As I write this, I am wrestling with splurging on a Custom Cameo by Vancouver-based jewellery designer Candace Ang. Ang, in typical Canadian fashion, is a bigger deal south of the border than in her home country. She went to Parsons then worked with Cynthia Rowley and Lee Angel.The personalized cameo, a silhouette in cast resin, is a pretty alternative to generic baubles: You simply upload a profile photo of yourself (or whomever) and Ang illustrates it into a silhouette cameo necklace or brooch. Instant heirloom! And so much subtler (though only slightly less narcissistic) than an embroidered monogram. Expect to wait about six weeks for your finished "memento moi" -- which means it will arrive, lavishly packaged and accompanied by a frame-worthy portrait illustration, just as you're starting to wear fall's Gothic-inflected frocks. Perfect timing."
